
HOUSTON- The University of St. Thomas Athletic Department honors a male and female student-athlete every year based on their excellence on the court, in the classroom and within the UST community. Men's Basketball's Cameron Gims has been named the 2021 Co-Male Student-Athlete of the Year. Tom Hultsch from Men's Soccer is the other recipient of this award.
Gims, a junior guard from Cypress, Texas will add Co-Student-Athlete of the Year to his already impressive resume. In addition to being tabbed the teams' Most Valuable Player, he also was named SCAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Gims appeared and started in every game for the Celts and averaged 9.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.6 blocks a game.
"Receiving these honors feels amazing" Gims said. "It shows that all my hard work, sacrifice and dedication is being recognized not just from my teammates and coaches but the entire university.
He also excelled in the classroom, posting a cumulative 3.05 GPA in the Accounting/MBA program.
Gims has played a huge role in the Celts' success on the court since arriving to UST. He has won three championships in three years with Head Coach Anthony Medina and has a career record of 58-17. In this years SCAC championship game, Gims posted 18 points and 11 rebounds while knocking down two pivotal three pointers down the stretch.
"Cameron is the anchor for our entire program in more ways than one" Head Coach Anthony Medina said. "To most, his defensive ability and accolades are what make him such a special player. To us, it is his commitment to excellence and dedication to be a great teammate that make him special."
