MARSHALL, Texas – The Celts' five-game win streak came to an end Saturday in a 78-63 loss at No. 15 Wiley.
St. Thomas (18-8, 9-5 Red River Athletic Conference) fell into a tie for fourth place in the league standings with four games to play. Wiley (18-5, 10-4) sits a game ahead of the Celts in third.
The Wildcats built a 13-point halftime lead after closing the first half with a 14-3 surge over the final 3:44. The Celts fell behind by as many as 26 with 11:33 remaining in the game before cutting the deficit to 13 on a field goal by Cameron Gims (FR/Cypress, Texas) at the 4:01 mark. But UST got no closer than 12 when Michael Alfred (JR/Baton Rogue, Louisiana) sank two free throws with 1:53 to go.
Paris Marquez (SR/Atascocita, Texas) finished with 21 points, five assists and five rebounds for the Celts, who were held to 21 field goals – their second lowest of the season. Gims had 10 points, seven boards and five blocks. Sam Flores (SR/El Paso, Texas) scored nine points, and Orowo Eleyae (SR/Houston, Texas) had eight.
Joshua Hamilton scored 20 points, and Martavious Washington added 15 for the Wildcats, who like the Celts, shot under 40 percent.
It was the second time this season Wiley limited St. Thomas to 21 field goals. Wayland Baptist held the Celts to 20 back in October.
UST was outrebounded, 46-35. The Celts shot 10 of 26 from long range. The Wildcats went 9 of 19.
Wiley outscored St. Thomas, 12-0, in second chance points. The Wildcats' bench outscored the Celts, 34-15.
St. Thomas will host No. 23 Louisiana State-Shreveport at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
