
SHERMAN, Texas – The St. Thomas Celts baseball team split their doubleheader with Austin College on Saturday, capping off their three-game series with a dominant 22-12 win in Game 1 before falling 9-7 in Game 2. The results move the Celts to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in SCAC conference play.
Game 1: UST 22, Austin College 12
The Celts' offense exploded in the first game, scoring early and often to secure a victory. St. Thomas set the tone in the top of the first inning when Alex Trinh launched a three-run home run to left field, driving in Jarod Smith and Tyler Mills to make it 3-0. AJ Gonzales followed with a three-run homer of his own, scoring Dylan Lamb and Dillon McKee to extend the lead to 6-0.
The Celts continued to pour it on in the second inning, with Dylan Lamb and Gabe Garner contributing RBIs to push the lead to 8-0. Austin College got on the board in the bottom of the second, but St. Thomas responded with four more runs in the third, highlighted by RBI singles from Alex Trinh, Dillon McKee, and Dylan Lamb, making it 12-1.
The offensive onslaught continued in the fourth inning, as the Celts scored seven runs, including a three-run homer by Dillon McKee and a solo shot by Dylan Lamb. AJ Gonzales added a two-run homer, stretching the lead to 19-2.
Austin College fought back with a series of runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Celts sealed the game in the top of the seventh when Dillon McKee homered again, driving in Alex Trinh to make it 22-12.
Game 2: UST 7, Austin College 9
The second game was a tighter contest, with Austin College bouncing back to secure the win. The Celts took an early lead in the top of the first when Tyler Mills stole home, but the Roos responded with five runs in the third inning, including a three-run homer, to take a 5-1 lead.
Austin College extended their lead to 9-1 by the sixth inning, but the Celts mounted a late rally. In the top of the sixth, Sam Lampson singled up the middle, driving in Gabe Garner and Dylan Lamb to cut the deficit to 9-3.
St. Thomas continued to fight in the ninth inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run double by Dylan Lamb and a sacrifice fly by Gabe Garner, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback, as the Roos held on for the 9-7 victory.
