Celts Split Doubleheader at Schreiner to take three-game series

KERRVILLE, Texas – A ninth-inning comeback by Schreiner in game one kept the University of St. Thomas baseball team from sweeping a Saturday doubleheader but the Celts did return to Houston with a three-game series victory.

The Mountaineers scored five runs in the ninth inning of game one to stun UST 8-7 before the Celts responded with a 10-3 win the second game.

The Celts (8-11) have won six out of their last seven games and are 2-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play after taking two of the three games at Schreiner. UST has scored at least seven runs in each of their last seven contests.

Saturday's doubleheader split pushed the Celts above .500 in SCAC play for the first time since winning their conference opener at Southwestern exactly one year ago. Southwestern won the next two games and UST was unable to get back to .500 for the remainder of the season.

UST returns to action Tuesday when the Celts visit East Texas Baptist for single nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Celts will play their first conference home series this weekend when they host Austin College, with the games being played at Houston Baptist University. First pitch in Friday's contest is scheduled for 2 p.m.
