ABILENE, Texas – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas were denied their first series sweep in the modern era of the baseball program Saturday as McMurry claimed a 12-11 win in 16 innings.
The host Warhawks overcame a six-run deficit in the bottom of the eighth inning, and then won the game with a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the 16th.
Noah Martinez (JR/New Braunfels, Texas) went 4-for-5 with four RBIs for the Celts, while Kyle Bearden (FR/Spring, Texas) and Adam Scharf (JR/Joliet, Ill.) knocked three hits apiece. Hunter Pachal (FR/Conroe, Texas) went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs; Cesar Arcizo (JR/Brookshire, Texas) also knocked two RBIs in the game.
Starting pitcher Kalob Bacak (SO/Spring, Texas) pitched five innings and scattered four hits while striking out three batters and allowing just one earned run. Jason Brown (FR/Sugar Land, Texas) pitched five and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief in the extra innings and struck out 10 batters.
The Celts opened the game with six runs in the top of the first. Pachal knocked a two-RBI single with the bases loaded for the first two runs, and Arcizo added to the lead with a two-RBI double.
UST forced extra innings with a two-run rally in the ninth to tie the game at 11-11. Martinez collected his fourth RBI of the game on a groundout that scored Scharf. Then Bearden hit an RBI single to score Edward Gutierrez (FR/Brooklyn, N.Y.) from second base.
The Celts will be back in action this weekend when they host the UST Celt Classic at Premier Baseball in Tomball, Texas. UST will host Minnesota–Morris in a doubleheader Friday, and then get a rematch with UMM and a game against Schreiner on Saturday.
Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon.
