Men's Soccer Advances to SCAC Final With Win Over Southwestern

With a late 9:45 pm kickoff in place, the Celts were not phased in their semi-final match with Southwestern University as they won 3-1. With this win, Men's Soccer advances to the SCAC final against Trinity University on Sunday.

To kick off the scoring in the 7th minute, Daniel Castro found the back of the net with help from Ayomide Salako and Diego Lazo. From there, both defenses held firm for the next 30 minutes until St. Thomas added to their goal total. Dany Ramirez made the score 2-0 and seemingly put the Pirates away. However, just one minute later, Southwestern added one to cut the deficit in half and the score 2-1. With both teams not wanting to give an inch, the score held until the 71st minute when Jair Perez scored his first of the season and made the score 3-1. With this goal, the lead was too large for Southwestern to come back from as their season ended with a loss to St. Thomas.

Southwestern struggled to generate any offense throughout the entire match, only with six shots to St. Thomas' 20. The Celts would also hold the corner advantage 4-0. Both teams would not go unscathed though, as St. Thomas recorded five cautions and drew three Pirate Cautions. Southwestern also notched a red card in the 88th minute which gave the Celts a one-man advantage to not let the score change.

With a trip to the national tournament on the line, Men's Soccer will face the Trinity University Tigers at 1pm at Austin College for the title. This is a rematch of last year's final where St. Thomas defeated the Tigers 1-0.
