Houston, Texas – Sunday afternoon at Sabercat's Stadium, the University of St. Thomas women's soccer team hosted the Austin College Kangaroos in a match that would be the last of the season for both teams. Neither the Roos nor the Celts were in contention for a SCAC Tournament berth, but both teams played like a Championship was on the line, battling to the final horn to a 1-1 draw. This result brought the Celt's overall record to 6-8-3 and a SCAC mark of 2-7-1, wrapping up the 2024 season positively.
The first half unfolded as a tightly contested affair, with both teams vying for control. However, the tide turned when an unfortunate own goal at the 19-minute mark put the Kangaroos ahead 1-0. Despite the setback, the Celts remained resilient, pushed forward, and gained momentum heading into halftime.
The Celts emerged with renewed energy and determination as the second half began. They continued their offensive pressure and started to see chances. The breakthrough came in the 77th minute when Astrid Mencia found an equalizer off a brilliant goal assist by Hope Billington. This moment ignited a wave of enthusiasm, and it looked like the home team might find a winning goal, but the game and the season came to a 1-1 end.
While the team struggled late in the SCAC, this year's 6 victories are the most since the 2018-19 season and show a bright future for the Celts.
