The University of St. Thomas women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker 1-0 at Belhaven College, in Jackson, Mississippi on Friday afternoon. The match was the season opener for both teams.
An own goal by the Celts in the 32nd minute was the only score in the match as UST goalkeeper Kylie Soich and her Belhaven counterpart Julianne Wilson combined to stop 10 shots on goal. Soich made seven saves in the match, including six in the second half to keep the Celts within striking distance.
Astrid Mencia gave the Celts their best chances to level the score, as she was credited with all three shots on goal recorded by UST players Friday. She was denied equalizers late in the second half as Wilson stopped her shots in the 80th and 83rd minutes.
The Celts will not get much time to re-group, as they only travel a mile across Jackson to face Millsaps College today at 4 p.m.
