AUSTIN, TX – The University of St. Thomas women's soccer team has been terrific defensively for the last two seasons. Still, Sunday afternoon, the damn finally broke, and the Celts gave up 5 goals in an uncharacteristic outing. The result was a 5-1 loss from new conference foe Concordia. The Celts now hold 6-3-2 overall record and a 2-2 mark in SCAC play.
It wasn't all the Tornados that gave UST trouble; it was just one little twister named Maddie Oberholtzer that tore through the St. Thomas defense. Oberholtzer, a sophomore forward, scored 4 of Concordia's 5 goals. Starting with the match's first goal in the 33rd minute, Oberholtzer followed it up with goals in the 55th, 86th, and, to add insult to injury, the 90th minute. Things looked good for St. Thomas for the first third of the game, but the Tornados scored 3 goals in the middle 30, and the match was all but finished.
The Celts kept battling and made it interesting in the 79th minute when Valerie Vazquez scored off an assist from Brianna Munoz. Unfortunately, that was as close as it got, and Concordia put two meaningless goals in the final 5 minutes of the match.
Match Notes
· Valerie Vazquez scored her 3rd goal of the season.
· Concordia's 5 goals were more than the Celts gave up in the month of September.
