Houston, Texas - The University of St. Thomas Celts women's soccer team has faced the toughest portion of their schedule the last few weeks. Friday evening, they played a terrific match, but eventually dropped a tough 1-0 loss to the league-leading Trinity Tigers. Sunday afternoon was supposed to be the start of a successful final push to the end of the season. Unfortunately, no one informed the Schreiner Mountaineers as they played spoilers to the Celts' plans and defeated the hosts 3-1. St Thomas now sits at 6-7-2 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Schreiner set the tone early, scoring twice in the first 30 minutes and taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. Coach Nataki Stewert's halftime speech looked like the remedy the Celts needed as they came out strong in the second half, determined to change the momentum. In the 50th minute, Ashley Pugne capitalized on a well-placed assist from Astrid Mencia, cutting Schreiner's lead to 2-1. Fired up and seeking the equalizer, the Celts dominated early in the 2nd half and put up eight shots, to Schriener's 2. But the Mountaineers were more efficient and managed to score again in the 66th minute, widening their lead to 3-1.
Match Notes:
