Celts’ Unbeaten Streak Ends

Celts? Unbeaten Streak Ends

ABILENE, TX – The last loss for the University of St. Thomas Women's Soccer team was the season's opening game at Belhaven, Mississippi, on August 30th. After 41 days without a loss, UST suffered only their second-season loss. It came at the feet of new conference foe McMurry. It also marked the Celts' first SCAC defeat. The Warhawks of McMurry earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory over UST. The loss places the Celts as 6-2-2 overall and 2-1 in SCAC play.

McMurry came out strong in the first half, taking control early. In the 12th minute, the Warhawks' Jaelynn Portilla found the back of the net and a 1-0 advantage. It was a defensive battle most of the night, with St. Thomas only producing 7 shots throughout the entire 90 minutes. However, the Celts did not allow McMurry to threaten themselves much, as they finished with 12 shots. However, UST remained within striking distance as they entered the locker room down 1-0.

In the second half, the Celts kept the match tense until McMurry's Emery Kirby sealed the match with a goal in the 73rd minute. St. Thomas continued to search for a game-changer but was not able to break through.

Match Notes

· It was only the 2nd match of the season UST did not score.
