On a still hot Sunday afternoon in Alexandria, Louisiana, the University of St. Thomas women's soccer team played Mississippi University of Women in a neutral site soccer match and came away with a 3-1 victory, improving their season record to 4-1-2.
In the first half, the Celts applied pressure early and wasted no time by scoring the quickest goal in the history of the program. Twenty-three seconds into the match, UST's Astrid Mencias scored off an assist from Ashlee Stoltje. The early goal put St. Thomas up, but Mississippi University of Women responded at the 23rd minute mark with a game-tying goal. The Celts found a way to regroup, and just before halftime, Aliyah Bustamantes scored her first goal of the season, assisted by midfielder Emma Cerda.
Throughout the second half, the Celts continued to apply and maintain the pressure, eventually extending the lead in the 79th minute when Briahnna Munoz netted her first goal off a beautiful cross from Poala Colon, securing the 3-1 win for St. Thomas.
