Softball Wins Opening Round of SCAC Tournament 4-2

In a thrilling softball matchup to open up the SCAC tournament, St. Thomas (Tex.) emerged victorious over Austin with a 4-2 win.

The game began with Austin taking an early lead in the first inning when Elizabeth Preston scored on a throwing error by the catcher after Tori Fowler stole second base.

St. Thomas responded in the fourth inning with Isabelle Charles's impressive triple to right-center field, driving in Chloe Bennett to tie the game at 1-1.

Austin regained the lead in the fifth inning when Preston singled to center field, bringing Alissandra Tobar home, making it 2-1 in favor of Austin.

St. Thomas fought back in the bottom of the fifth, as Jaelyn Simmons drew a walk with the bases loaded, allowing Haley Lupian to advance home and tying the game at 2-2. Chloe Bennett then delivered a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Rebecca Archibald home and giving St. Thomas a 3-2 lead.

In the sixth inning, St. Thomas extended their lead when Archibald bunted for a single, driving in Delayne Moreno, and Lindsey Gonzalez crossed the plate, securing a 4-2 advantage for St. Thomas.

Pitchers Victoria Sossaman and Allison Hughes delivered strong performances for St. Thomas, holding Austin to just two runs on eight hits.

Ultimately, St. Thomas' resilience and timely hitting propelled them to victory in a closely contested game.
