Softball's Extra-Inning Heroics Earn Them the Series Split

Game one: UST- 1 OLLU-5

The first home run of the Celts short history kicked off the front end of this doubleheader. A shot to right field by Mallarie Munson gave UST the 1-0 advantage early. However, the Saints struck back with a three-run third inning sparked by a controversial fair/foul ball call to take a 3-1 lead. OLLU wouldn't let up and throughout the rest of the game, added 2 more runs while holding the Celts offense stagnant.

Game two: UST-11 OLLU- 4 (8)

In what seemed to be a pitcher's duel turned into an offensive clinic for the Celts late. The Saints started off hot as they tallied two runs in the bottom of the first. Defensively, OLLU frustrated the UST until a Shae Montemayor RBI single drove in Mia Terry to give UST life in the top of the sixth. As they entered into the top of seventh trailing by one, an Emma Garrett home run to deep center evened things up at two a piece. The Celts slowly chipped away at the Saints pitcher and were able drive in one more run heading into the bottom of the seventh. OLLU was able to answer this inning with a solo home run of their own to force extra innings.

With the bases loaded, Emma Burris stepped up to the plate and delivered a 2 RBI double to kick off extra innings. With UST on their final out of the inning, Montemayor continued to be an integral piece to the Celts success as she yet again drove in another run on a double to left field. To ice the game, Brenna Ruether had a three-run blast of her own to extend their lead. UST hung eight runs on the board in this inning, which would ultimately earn them the win.

Shae Montemayor torched the Saints going 4 for 5 with two RBIs for the game. Emma Burris and Mia Terry also tallied 2 RBIs. Ruether ended the contest with 3 RBIs off of her pivotal late-game home run. Zoe Jeffers (1-0) secured her first win of the season, closing out the game to hand the Celts the split on the series.

UST will be back in action March 2nd in Houston as they have a stand-alone game with Texas Southern University.
