ABILENE, TX -The St. Thomas Men's Soccer team should be called the "Road Warriors". With 10 of their first 13 games on the road, they have already traveled to Arkansas, Colorado, Alpine, and Abilene, Texas. Thursday, they bused to Abilene for the second time this season and faced a new conference foe. Unfortunately, UST dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to the McMurry Warhawks. The loss also drops the Celts' overall record to 6-4 and 2-2 in SCAC play.
McMurry struck before the Celts got their legs going, finding the back of the net in just the 12th minute when Arik Phillips scored unassisted. St. Thomas woke up and remained determined, outshooting McMurry 12-1 throughout the first half. Their persistence paid off when, right before the break, leading goal-scorer Daniel Castro struck in the final minute of the half, leveling the game at 1-1.
The second half saw more of the same, as St. Thomas dominated throughout but only grew more frustrated as the clock ticked away. With the Celts outshooting McMurry 22-7, a draw was not a desired result. Unfortunately, the Warhawks broke the tie and the hearts of Celt fans when they were awarded a Penalty in the 89th minute. Celt Keeper Cristo Gayoso stopped the initial penalty kick, but McMurry got to the rebound first and pounded home the win.
