Celts top Jaguars 3-0

The University of St. Thomas Men's Soccer team continues their strong 2022 campaign by defeating the University of Houston - Victoria Jaguars 3-0 in just their second game of the season last night at Houston Sports Park.

When these two competitive teams meet, there is always a show to watch. This year the Celts brought the heat when they began their early attack by opening up a scoring frenzy scoring all three goals within the first half (Taty Aleman 16', Ian Alvarez 23', and Danny Castro 43'). The Celts took a whopping 10 shots in the first half, 3 of which converted into goals. Our attacking squad were hungry for results and they relentlessly knocked on UHV's door until that was achieved. In the second half we saw more composure by the Celts who were still eager to put more behind the net, but were unable to get any past UHV's defense.

The Celt's defense comfortably maintained a shutout with an interchanging back line as the game progressed. During the first half the Celts were able to knock the ball around and play without too much pressure, until the second half where UHV became dangerous on a few accounts. Following a long stretch of tough defensive play, the Celts defense sealed the deal as the whistle blew to conclude the match.

Coach Ian Clerihew feels confident with his squad looking strong as they focus on the next game he stated, "It's a good early result for the beginning of the season, and I think we're in a good spot for only having one week of training under our belt. I also think we have a lot of great new players and we need to get them integrated and involved".

Next up the Celts play Angelina College this Saturday at 5pm at Houston Sports Park to conclude their preseason schedule.
