Men's Soccer releases 2022 Campaign

The University of St. Thomas Men's Soccer team released their fall 2022 schedule. Their season will consist of 16 games and eight SCAC matchups. The Celts will look to defend their SCAC title from last season against a field of 14 different teams.

In a rematch of last season's 1-0 nailbiting victory, the Celts will open their season against Concordia. Following them is Mary Hardin Baylor as the Celts will look to open up the season strong. They will then conclude out-of-conference games against McMurry, Sul Ross State, East Texas Baptist, and Hardin Simmons.

In the SCAC, St. Thomas will look to repeat as conference champions. They have will face the likes of Trinity, Southwestern, Colorado College and TLU. Trinity advanced to the national tournament before falling in the first round to Pacific Lutheran in Penalty Kicks.

Five of the Celt's All-SCAC performers will return in 2022. First team featured Ian Alverez. Second team included Daniel Castro, and Rodrigo Lazo. Finally, Seniors Andres Marquez and Gabe Salako achieved honorable mentions.

Forward Daniel Castro will look to build off his success in 2021. As a freshman, he scored 12 goals, ranking third in the SCAC. He also notched himself a spot in the St. Thomas record books as his career goal number is sixth all time. Castro will highlight a forward line that includes Ian Alverez and Gabe Salako

In the cage for the Celts will be Rodrigo Lazo. The goalkeeper would rank top five in nearly every category for the SCAC last season. Highlighted by a .808 save percentage, Lazo will look to anchor a Celt defense that ranked second in the SCAC last season.

The reigning Coach of the Year Ian Clerihew will return for his fifth season as head coach for Men's Soccer. Responsible for guiding Celt Men's Soccer to the NCAA, Clerihew has achieved back-to-back conference title game appearances. Now a full-time member of Division III, a conference victory will advance St. Thomas to the national tournament.

"This year is very exciting for me. Our guys now have the opportunity to compete at a higher level which will show in our trainings and games," Coach Ian Clerihew added.
