HOUSTON – The men's tennis team at the University of St. Thomas concluded the home portion of their schedule Saturday against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Southwestern (Texas).
At the Memorial Park Tennis Center, the visiting Pirates took the match by a 7-2 team score.
The Celts opened the day with a win in flight one of doubles play, as Juanrodrigo Lopez and Jace Ware claimed an 8-4 win over Vesko Lekovic and Hemanshu Rambojun. The flight two match featured a competitive showing from UST's Tyler Head and Carson Steele in an 8-2 loss to Hunter Bajoit and Jared Burton.
Head was UST's victor in singles play as he cruised to a straight-set victory in flight two without allowing Lekovic to take a single game.
Flight one of singles play saw Lopez fight hard before succumbing 6-1, 7-5 to Bajoit. In flight three, Ware turned in a strong performance against Anton Borovik, with Southwestern's player winning 6-4, 6-2.
The Celts return to action in a couple of weeks with a weekend stretch of three matches in three days during a trip to the north part of Texas. The Celts open the weekend Friday, April 22, when they visit LeTourneau in Longview for a 12 p.m. match.
UST will play its final SCAC match Saturday, April 23, at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. That match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start. The team will then conclude its regular season the following day at East Texas Baptist in Marshall, with the match scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
