The UST Men's Tennis team opened up their 2021 campaign with a home match against NCAA Division II, St Mary's University. The Celts showed great fight, despite falling to the Rattlers 9-0
Even though the day started with an hour-long rain delay, the energy showed by the Celts was bright. Race Haas and Jace Ware drop a hard-fought doubles match to Leon Hein and Ryan Koth of St. Mary's, 8-5. In line one and three of doubles, UST struggled to find their groove and dropped those sets, 8-2.
Juanrodrigo Lopez competed in line one for the Celts and showed great skill taking on Jeremiah Sanchez. However, Lopez would go on to lose the match 6-2, 6-1. The second line matchup was back and forth and very competitive as Race Haas gave Ryan Koth everything he had. Despite Haas nearly forcing a third set, the rattlers ran away with this one 6-2, 7-5. Tyler Head, Carson Steele, and Jace Ware competed for UST in Saturday's bout. Even with taking on Division II opponents, they represented the Celts proudly. Dorian Cudina was involved in a thriller that had St. Mary's Brenden Brown against the wall. Cudina clawed back into the match to force a tiebreaker. He ultimately would fall in this tight battle 6-2, 7-6 (6).
Men's Tennis will return to the courts next week as they travel to Georgetown to take on Southwestern University.
