Celts’ struggle in West Texas

Celts’ struggle in West Texas

Abeline, TX – After a solid win over the University of Dallas Saturday afternoon, the UST volleyball team looked primed and ready for a pivotal game at McMurry. Unfortunately, on Sunday afternoon, it looked like the long trip to Abilene had zapped the Celts' energy. The Warhawks, however, looked right at home jumping the road-weary visitors. McMurry dominated from the start and won handily. The loss drops the Celts to 10-13 overall and 5-6 in conference play.

St. Thomas looked ready to play at the beginning of the opening set, only trailing 7-9, but McMurry turned up their intensity, and the Celts could not match the hosts' speed and precision. The Warhawks ended the set, winning 16 of the last 18 points for an easy 25-11 first-set victory. Sets 2 and 3 followed similar patterns; St. Thomas hung around early before McMurry finished each set with solid runs and ultimately a 3-0 match victory. The win places McMurry a half-game ahead of UST in the SCAC standing.

Playing without Sophomore Alexis Bodunrin meant Audrey Cataline had to carry more offensive load. Cataline led the Celts with 7 kills on the offensive side of the net and contributed 14 digs defensively. Jazilyn Davis stepped up and made an impact, recording 6 kills. Kendall Howard facilitated the offense with 16 assists, while Kara Spice provided stability in the backcourt with a team-high 16 digs. Ally Peters helped defensively, recording 8 digs.
