Celts Comeback to defeat Warhawks

After flying back to Houston and regrouping from last week's match in the altitude in Colorado Springs, the St. Thomas volleyball team faced a tough McMurry Warhawks side that was determined to make UST earn the victory. The Celts survived a back-and-forth five-set action-packed match, securing the win with 15-10 5th Set win. Match scores of 25-14,18-25,17-25,25-17, and 15-10. The victory brings UST's overall record to 6-7 and 1-1 in SCAC play.

In the first set, UST jumped out early, taking a 14-5 lead, and never looked back, winning 25-14. It felt like it might be a quick night, however, the Celts continued their pattern of relaxing after winning a set, the Warhawks seized the opportunity and the momentum. McMurry gained confidence, dominated the 2nd, and 3rd sets 25-18 and 25-17, and looked to be in control.

Things did not look good for the Celts heading into the fourth set, but senior Kara Spice, along with juniors Audrey Cataline and Mia Medina were determined to lead the Celts to victory. The fourth set proved to be the turning Midway through the 4th set the Celts went on an 8-0 run, putting them up 14-5 when Cataline took over offensively with multiple Kills and Service Aces in the pivotal run.

Senior Laynee Beam got things started in the 5th with a statement finish. However, Cataline continued her dominance in the 5th set having a hand in 6 of the Celts' points. Sophomore Alexis Bodunrin got in on the action in the 5th with a couple of ectrifying finishes.

Offensively, Audrey Cataline led for the Celts with 15 kills while contributing 12 digs. Laynee Beam added 12 kills. Kara Spice led defensively with 25 digs and Kendall Howard contributed 26 assists and 12 digs. Medina was integral in the win keeping balls alive and her teammates energized when things looked tough.

UST is looking to build off their performance as they prepare for their upcoming conference home match on Sunday, September 29th at 2:30.
