The University of St. Thomas Volleyball team is locked in for the SCAC Tournament this weekend in Georgetown, Texas. The Celts, fresh off their best win total in conference play since joining the SCAC, find themselves in the fourth seed and opening their tournament with a rubber match against #5 Schreiner on Friday.
All-Around Firepower Keys Celts
The Celts have put together a versatile attack this season, featuring six players recording at least 100 kills. The only other teams to have six players reach that milestone and make the conference tournament are the top two seeds, TLU and Trinity. Still leading the charge is sophomore Audrey Cataline, the Celts' offensive leader all season. Cataline's 377 kills leads the conference, and her 3.52 kills per set ranks second. Seniors Trinity Atkins and Laynee Beam have also contributed to the versatility up front with 232 and 187 kills, respectively.
Strong Foundation Holds Up Defense
On the other side of the net, the Celts' defense has been anchored all season by junior Kara Spice. Spice leads the team and conference in digs with 668 to set the tone for a UST defense that ranks second in the SCAC in digs and opponent hitting percentage. In addition, sophomore Karrington Kays ranks sixth in the conference in blocks per set.
The Celts' all-around prowess has helped them secure some strong wins this season, including a sweep of tournament-bound Southwestern and splits with tournament-bound Schreiner and Colorado College.
They begin their tournament run Friday morning at 10:30 against Schreiner. Be sure to follow the website for more information and updates.
