The University of St. Thomas Volleyball team wrapped up their 2022 preseason campaign with an intersquad scrimmage between Red and Black teams. In a close match featuring 20 ties and seven lead changes, the Black team claimed victory in four sets.
Whenever the Celts play each other, it is always a competitive match. This was apparent in the first set where each team traded blows to the end. However, the black team would showcase their skills and take the first set 25-21 closed by a kill from Laynee Beam. In the second set, the red team would start hot and go up 3-0. They held a lead until a 9-3 black run midway through to come back and win 25-20. The pivotal third set saw red dominate. Capped off by an impressive 12-assist performance from Emerson Sykes, red stayed alive with a 25-16 set victory. Finally, in the fourth set, both teams showed grit as seven ties would keep things close. After black took a tight 19-14 lead, the game ended on a 6-8 run securing black the victory.
Laynee Beam would have a standout performance recording 14 kills. Not far behind at 11 kills was Paige Havel. Emerson Sykes would impress offensively, dishing out a team-high 25 assists. Ally Peters would also anchor her team's defense with 26 digs in the contest.
Up next, the Celts take on East Texas Baptist on September 1st at 6 pm, in the Jerabeck Activity and Athletics Center. This is the University of St. Thomas' first sanctioned Division III game.
