HOUSTON- The University of St. Thomas Athletic Department honors a male and female student-athlete every year based on their excellence on the court, in the classroom and within the UST community. Volleyball's Kaylyn Latin has been named the 2021 Marjorie Evans- Female Student-Athlete of the Year.
Latin, a senior from Houston, Texas, anchored the Celts' defense for the past two seasons. In addition to picking up First Team All-Conference honors, she was also named the SCAC Backrow Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Latin led the conference during the regular season in digs (407) and digs per set (7.14) – the second-highest average in league history. She is also the all-time record holder in UST history for digs per set in a season and in a career. Latin recorded a season high 48 digs in a five-set thriller over Schreiner.
"I feel really great and proud to receive this honor" Latin said. "I want to say thank you UST; you will always have a place in my heart! To the students-athletes, work hard every day to get better!"
In the classroom, Latin excelled as she posted one of the highest GPAs in the Volleyball program. She graduated with a degree in Psychology while holding a 3.78 GPA. She has just recently been accepted into a Nursing Program at Louisiana State University and will start in the Fall.
"She has set the bar high for Liberos to come" Head Coach Keanne Burt said. "She has been a leader and a mentor to our program and will leave a lasting impact. She has been a joy to have here these last 2 years. Her constant smile will be missed!"
