Five Singles Wins Lift Celts to Victory Over Schreiner

SPRING, Texas – The University of St. Thomas women's tennis team dominated singles play Saturday as they claimed a 6-3 victory over Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Schreiner.

The Celts won the top five flights in singles play to secure the victory over the Mountaineers. Their mastery of the singles competitions helped overcome a 2-1 deficit after completing doubles play.

"I was proud of the team. They fought hard today," UST head tennis coach Jack Brasington said. "I was proud of them for how they recovered from the setback in doubles with their strong performance in singles play."

Though competitive, flights one and two went to the Celts with relative ease, as Ana Maria Gonzalez and Alejandra Lopez took early victories. Gonzalez defeated Hannah Reyna by scores of 6-2, 6-3, while Lopez defeated Victoria Morales 6-2, 6-4.

The wins for Gonzalez and Lopez capped a winning day for the duo, who combined for the Celts' only doubles victory as they defeated Reyna and Morales 8-4.

In flight three, UST's Alyssa Davila also needed two regulation sets to turn away Blair Drought-Villarreal, winning 6-4, 6-3.

The Celts won the decisive fifth point in a hard-fought match in flight four. UST's Jenny Reynolds outlasted Katelyn Ruiz by scores of 6-4, 7-6; Reynolds won the tiebreaker in the second set 6-4.

Flight five saw Karissa Guzman defeated Schreiner's Rachel Rompel 6-2, 7-6 to complete the day for the Celts.

Brasington also noted that he was proud of his team for giving a spirited performance on such a warm day.

"The conditions were tough today. This is probably the hottest day in which we've competed," he said. "It affected both teams, but I'm proud of the team in how they played and overcame the deficit and adverse conditions."

The Celts return to action Saturday, April 9, when they host Southwestern in a SCAC competition. The match will begin with doubles play at 10 a.m. at the Memorial Park Tennis Center.
