Track and Field Looks for More Success in 2024

Track and Field Looks for More Success in 2024

After posting program-best scores at the 2023 SCAC Championships, St. Thomas Track and Field is primed for another strong season in 2024. Both teams mix returning talent with new additions to their rosters as they look to raise the bar again this season.

Men's Track: Reaching New Heights

A year ago, UST Men's Track posted their highest score in three seasons with 74 points, finishing fourth in the conference. The scoring was led by a third place finish in the 4x400 relay by Jacob Smith, Eduardo Waller, Bryce McIntyre and Terrence Veal. McIntyre also posted strong individual performances, racking up 26.5 points for the team across the 200m, 400m and long jump in addition to his performance on the relay team. Matthew Hicks also recorded an individual silver medal in the high jump. With plenty of returning talent and 7 new additions to the roster this season, 2024 sets up to be another strong year for the Celts.

Women's Track: Building on Success

Like Men's Track, the women's team finished fourth in the conference last season with an impressive score of 84 points at the SCAC Championships. Women's Track returns champions in the 200m sprint and 100m hurdles, as well as teams that won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Ebonee Nation leads the way in 2024 after receiving both Newcomer and Athlete of the Year last season thanks to medals in the 100m, 100m hurdles and 4x100 relay. Kaela Sawyer is also a returning champion for the Celts in the 200m. Nation and Sawyer are joined by Trinity Provost and Ny'Cierra Hinton on the winning 4x100 relay. The 4x400 relay team of Makayla Powell, Christina Stinson, Nelsy Vera and Provost also all return to build on a silver medal performance last season. With the majority of the team coming back for 2024 and 8 more additions, Women's Track is prepared for a promising season.

Ready to Roll into 2024

Head coach Jarrick Wright, going into his first season as the full-time track and field head coach, is looking to continue building a strong program. "Both groups had an amazing season last year," Wright said. "With our new additions, we only look to build off those medal performances."

UST Track and Field heads on the road this Friday for the BSC Icebreaker, an indoor meet in Birmingham, Alabama. Be sure to follow ustcelts.com for updates and results as the Celts look for another strong season!
