Celts Race Trinity in Conference Opener

Celts Race Trinity in Conference Opener

At Trinity University on Friday and Saturday, the St. Thomas Men's and Women's Swimming teams squared off with the Tigers in their first SCAC swim meet in program history. The Celts displayed toughness and determination in their first meet, but recorded lower overall team scores on both days of the event. On Friday, the men's team was outscored by a margin of 93-54, while the women's team was outscored 118-36. Both teams bounced back on Saturday with strong results but ultimately fell again; the men were outscored 46-28, and the women were outscored 57-36.

Here's a recap of the weekend's individual performances:

MEN

  • Dakota Smith built on a fast start to the season with a trio of top-three finishes on Friday, finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle as well as third in the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley. On Saturday, he continued his strong performance, finishing third in the 200-yard freestyle and posting a competitive time in fourth in the 50-yard butterfly.

  • Lucas Blado and Charlie Wallace each competed in a team-high six events for the Celts across both days. Blado posted top-three times in all of his individual events Friday before posting another top-three finish and leading the Celts' 400-yard mixed relay team on Saturday. Wallace claimed a pair of top-three finishes of his own across the event and was also part of the 400 mixed relay team.

  • Josiah Mendez competed in five events for the weekend and recorded competitive times in all of them. He was at his best in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, but he also showed his versatility as he competed in the 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard butterfly.

  • Oscar Mayorga only competed in one event for the Celts this weekend, but he made it count. He secured a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly on Friday in his only event at the meet.

WOMEN

  • Kelsy Elgar and Ava Verret each competed in five events for the Celts, tied for the most on the women's team. They were each part of the 400-yard mixed relay team. Elgar was the top UST finisher in each of her other four events, including a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke on Friday. Verret competed admirably as well, posting competitive times in each of her four events across the weekend against top-20 competition from Trinity.

  • Allyson Pantin and Emely Lopez each competed in four events across the weekend. Pantin led the way for the Celts on Friday with a pair of top-three finishes, while Lopez took over the scoring for the Celts on Saturday in her two events.

With their first SCAC competition under their belts, the Celts get a couple weeks to rest up before heading back to Trinity for the Tiger Invitational beginning on November 17. For more information and full results from this weekend, be sure to check our website!
