Houston, Texas - The University of St. Thomas is thrilled to announce its 2024-25 Men's and Women's Swim schedule. In only its second year as a program, the Celts have already started training and ready to build on the foundation they set in their 23-24 inaugural season under the leadership of Head Coach Hanna Huston, who will be in her second year as the Celts' leader.
Season Kickoff
St. Thomas will dive into the pool and their season with a home meet against a tough NAIA squad from Loyola of New Orleans. The opening meet will take place on October 13th at Rice University's Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center, which serves as UST's home pool https://recreation.rice.edu/aquatics. This will be the first of eight meets before the team heads into the SCAC Conference Championship, hosted at the Garland Independent School District Natatorium https://gisdnatatorium.net/.
As they prepare for the season, the Celts celebrate notable achievements from last year. Charles Wallace has been recognized as the Swimmer of the Week for his impressive performances, showcasing his potential to lead the team. Additionally, Lucas Blado demonstrated his competitive spirit by finishing 7th in the 100 Backstroke at the SCAC Championship, solidifying his place among the top eight swimmers in the event.
Leadership
This season, UST welcomes back "experience" for the first time in its young history. However, the roster will still consist entirely of only freshmen and sophomores. Sophomores Lucas Blado, Charles Wallace, and Oscar Mayorga will help Coach Huston lead a talented group of freshmen on the men's side. While Ava Verret, Emely Lopez, and Kelsy Elgar welcome a few new teammates for the Celt women.
The "upperclassmen" will provide valuable experience and leadership to the roster of young talent. These returning student-athletes are poised to lead the program and guide their new teammates through collegiate competition. The newcomers bring a mix of enthusiasm, and together with the veterans, they form a potentially dynamic team ready to make a mark in their second year of competition. Head Coach Huston says, "I'm excited about the second season- we got our feet wet last year, and I know the student-athletes are hungry and ready to continue building on the momentum from last season."
