Celts edge Sul Ross State in overtime for season's first victory

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas claimed their first victory of the season and their first as an NCAA Division III member institution Saturday with a 1-0 overtime win over visiting Sul Ross State.

After both teams were held scoreless for the 90 minutes of regulation, the Celts needed less than minute to claim the win as Nick Seydler (pictured) ended the contest with a sharp 18-yard strike 36 seconds after the restart. Olivio Palermo was credited with the assist.

Omar Lopez made three saves for the Celts as he picked up the shutout win in goal.

Though St. Thomas controlled the pace of the match and had more scoring chances – the Celts held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks taken – the visiting Lobos were denied a goal in the first half when a one-on-one with the goalkeeper was negated when Lopez was fouled.

The Celts return to action Wednesday, Sept. 4, when they visit longtime Red River Athletic Conference rival Our Lady of the Lake. UST's next home match is Sunday, Sept. 8, when the Celts host Houston–Victoria.
