
Game One: UST-2 Southwestern-3
The Celts opened up game one scoring five unanswered points and would hang onto the lead for the majority of the contest. As Southwestern threatened to steal set one, A Laynee Beam service ace would close the door on the Pirates to take set one, 25-23.
The second set challenged the Celts as they struggled to find an answer to Southwestern's offense. Every time the Celts would gain some momentum the Pirates would snatch it back to cruise to 25-17 win.
As both squads traded blows early in set three, the Celts would rattle together seven-straight points to gain momentum and a 15-9 lead. They would hold onto this advantage for the rest of the set to go up 2-1 on the Pirates.
With their heels against the wall, Southwestern overwhelmed the Celts, opening the set on a 14-4 run. UST was never able to recover and would drop set four, 25-11.
The deciding fifth set was back and forth as the largest lead for any team never surpassed two points. As the fifth set battle was nearing its end, a service ace from Kaylyn Latin evened the score up at 13. However, two straight points from Southwestern would give them the match, 15-13.
Kaylyn Latin recorded a game-high 29 digs, while Kelsie Walker would dish out a team-high 22 assists. Offensively, the contribution was spread out as Alyssa Ajlouny and Laynee Beam recorded nine kills each; Beam hit .412 and also had two service aces. Trinity Atkins and Emily Jaroszewski would each chip in eight kills as well.
Game Two: UST-1 Southwestern-3
Game two of this conference doubleheader did not start the way the Celts had planned it. Southwestern would open up set one with an 11-2 run, forcing UST to fight uphill for. The remainder of the set. Although bring it to within two points, the Celts would drop the first set, 25-23.
Looking to bounce back in set two, UST found themselves trading shots early. It wasn't until an eight straight points from the Pirates that this set would slip away from the Celts.
On their last leg, UST had to make an aggressive push at Southwestern if they wanted to earn the series split. The match was neck and neck until the Celts fired off four straight points to take set three and stay alive.
Set four started off with both teams battling, searching for that ever-so important momentum. As the set was winding down, Southwestern constructed multiple runs to secure the 3-1 victory over UST.
Volleyball will be back in action next week when they travel to San Antonio to take on #2 Trinity University
