Celts fight uphill battle at LeTourneau

LONGVIEW, Texas – The University of St. Thomas women's tennis team lost at LeTourneau on Friday to open a three-match road trip to Northeast Texas.

At LeTourneau University's Davis Tennis Courts, the shorthanded Celts fell 6-3 despite winning three contested singles matches.

By sweeping doubles play, the host Yellow Jackets assured themselves of a match victory by reaching the necessary five points. UST's Alejandra Lopez and Jenny Reynolds fell 8-4 in a hard-fought flight one doubles match, while the Celts' Karissa Guzman and Regina Lopez dropped their match 8-2 to Bailey Deatherage and Brandy Weems.

The flight three doubles match went to LeTourneau by default.

In the singles competitions, Lopez turned away Deatherage by scores of 7-5, 6-3 in flight one, giving Lopez her fourth individual win in six matches against Division III opponents this season.

In flight two, Reynolds cruised to an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over LeTourneau's Emma Boulanger. UST's third point came in flight three singles as Guzman defeated Clara Brisman 7-5, 6-2.

The Celts faced an added degree of difficulty in flights two and three, as Boulanger and Brisman were the recipients of LeTourneau's default win in doubles competition, and were rested by the time singles' play began.

UST will play its final Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match Saturday, April 23, at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. That match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start. The Celts will then conclude their regular season the following day at East Texas Baptist in Marshall, with the match scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
