Celts close 2019 season with win at Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas ended the 2019 season on a winning note Tuesday with a 2-1 victory at Austin College.

Monica Stieh and Kelsie Droptini scored the first goals of their UST careers to lead the Celts (5-8-2, 2-5-1 SCAC) to the win. Stieh, a junior transfer from Holmes Community College in Mississippi, put the Celts ahead in the 18th minute with a strike off a pass from Aeriana Lewis.

With the score tied 1-1, it was Lewis providing the assist again in the 66th minute as she placed a corner kick in the right spot for Droptini to head home the first goal of her collegiate career.

Senior goalkeeper Jordan Thompson finished her career with a win in goal. She made seven saves for the Celts in the win.

Tuesday's match was a makeup contest from Oct. 25 that was rained out. The match had postseason implications for Austin College. UST's win prevented Austin College from qualifying for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.

The end of 2019 season brought to a close the careers of seniors Thompson, Sydney Wright, Kennedy Sessions, Narcedalia Yanez, and Katarina Maksimov. All were regulars on the 2019 team; Sessions was a two-year letterwinner with the Celts after transferring from Angelina College, while the rest were all four-year letterwinners.
