Celts down Southwestern for ninth win in last 10 games

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas swept their weekend road trip to Central Texas with a 74-58 win Saturday at Southwestern (Texas).

All five UST starters scored in double-figures Saturday as the Celts (17-5) won for the ninth time in their past 10 games. UST improved to 12-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Sheridan Hopkins (Galveston, Texas / Ball) scored a team-high 20 points and pulled in six rebounds to lead the Celts. Jazz Taylor (Duncanville, Texas / Abilene Christian) scored 15 points and handed out eight assists for UST.

UST's Micayla Hamilton (Richmond, Texas / Foster) chipped in 11 points, while Bresha Orange (Longview, Texas / Panola College) and Aerial Starks (Houston, Texas / A&M Consolidated) added 10 points apiece for the Celts.

The Celts jumped out to an 18-5 lead after one quarter and never looked back as they led from start to finish. UST held the host Pirates to 1-of-14 shooting (7.1 percent) from the floor during the game's opening 10 minutes.

UST players – Hopkins, more precisely – went to the free throw line only six times, 20 fewer attempts than Southwestern. However, the Celts made up for that discrepancy by shooting 50 percent (13 of 26) from 3-point range. Taylor was 5-for-5 from the 3-point arc.

The Celts play their final regular-season road game Friday, Feb. 14, when they visit Centenary. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
